New York-based photographer Zoe Wetherall seeks to portray the structured geometry of both natural and constructed forms, using her camera to reveal the beauty of the subtle patterns hidden in the landscapes and architecture. Originally from Melbourne, Wetherall has been a resident of New York City since 2016. This series, focusing on US and Australian locations and shot from the baskets of hot-air balloons in flight, showcases her two home countries from a unique vantage point. Using a literal bird’s-eye view enables her to document this contrast and employ the visible landscape as a means of abstraction.
In this exhibition of semi-abstract aerial photographs, Wetherall explores the intricate geometry formed when manmade and natural elements converge. Photographing straight downward from a few hundred feet, Wetherall deliberately excludes the horizon, sky, or any visual reference points, focusing instead on the subtle patterns hidden within architecture and landscapes. This absence of a visible horizon flattens the perspective, eliminating depth and emphasizing the delicate textures, geometric patterns, and nuanced hues that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Wetherall photographs from the basket of a hot air balloon, infusing her work with an element of performance, albeit from behind the lens. This delicate and unconventional method grants her a measure of control over elements such as distance and timing, allowing her to make decisions both before and during the shoot. However, the fleeting nature of this approach means she cannot return to retake a landscape once she has gently drifted past it.
Wetherall, an Australian photographer now based in New York with her dog, Pixel, has garnered numerous photography awards in cities such as Tokyo, Moscow, New York, Los Angeles, and across Australia. Her work was recently featured in a two-person exhibition at the Australian Consulate in Manhattan and a solo exhibition at the American Australian Association. Additionally, her photographs have been published in prominent outlets, including the Harvard Business Review, LensCulture, Design Boom, American Photo, and Meer Magazine, among others.
